About MR Guided Focused Ultrasound (HIFU)

MRgFUS or HIFU is a form of treatment for tremor and symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease. Essential tremor, also referred to as familial, idiopathic or benign tremor, causes uncontrollable shaking that can impact a person’s ability to live an independent and active lifestyle. When an essential tremor patient does not get tremor relief from medications, the MR Guided Focused Ultrasound treatment could be an option. Parkinson’s Disease may present with predominantly tremor that is not well treated with medication. MRgFUS is also effective at treating this form of tremor and is approved for the treatment of dyskinesia associated with Parkinson’s Disease.

MR Guided Focused Ultrasound uses targeted ultrasound waves to treat the small spot in the brain considered to be responsible for causing tremor. No incisions or permanent implants are needed for the treatment and it is performed using focused ultrasound and an MRI scanner. Read important safety information HERE.
